Spunkt Art Now is an investigation into the influences and manifestations of punk in contemporary art. The parallels between punk and contemporary art are deeply rooted in the notion of avant-garde. Indeed, Punk borrows its arrogance, sense of provocation and nihilism from well-known artistic movements such as Situationism, Dada and Futurism. But how does this unique legacy translate to the contemporary moment? What might punk offer to contemporary art and its audiences? A channel for anger? A cannon of political movements? Spunkt Art Now brings to the fore the living aesthetics of the Punk movement through performances, exhibitions, and a publication.
This title is based on the contraction of the terms spunk and punkt. An English word, spunk means having heart, guts, courage and determination. Of German origin, the term punkt means “point”, evoking the notion of a point in time, a meeting point or making a point. This language game forms the neologism “spunkt” which keeps at its heart the word punk.
